FM Livni: We need to remind ourselves where we stood only a year ago, when we faced terror attacks, when the situation in the Gaza Strip led to an understanding that there was no hope for peace.

We launched Annapolis process. There is now a dialogue between Israel and diplomatic leaders on the Palestinian side. There is hope for peace, which can represent the interests of both sides.

Israeli Defense Minister Barak told Egyptian President Mubarak that he release of the abducted soldier, Gilad Shalit, occupies a place of prime importance on Israel's national agenda and that Israel views Egypt as a central factor in Shalit's return. Barak also conveyed his appreciation for Egypt's efforts in preventing arms smuggling to the Gaza Strip, but emphasized efforts must be made to reduce smuggling even more.

The Prime Minister’s Conference for Export and International Cooperation to be held in Jerusalem on November 12, 2008 will mark 60 years of independence and economic achievements. The conference will feature three conferences dedicated to technological sectors in which Israel has gained international reputation for its innovative technologies and achievements.

An Israeli-Jordanian initiative project, spearheaded by Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME), aims to revive the Jordan valley, and the Rotenberg compound along with it, as a unique eco-tourism site spanning both sides of the border.

The Rotenberg Power Plant supplied both sides of the Jordan River valley with electricity from 1932  up until 1948 when it was destroyed.

Behind the Headlines: Israeli release of Palestinian prisoners

The Government of Israel decided on August 17, 2008 to release approximately 200 Palestinian prisoners in accordance to the criteria set by previous  government decisions. The prisoner release was carried out at 09:30 on Monday, 25 August. Through this latest confidence-building measure, Israel seeks to intensify its continued dialogue with partners who are both committed to diplomacy and opposed to terrorism.

A 2,600 year old clay seal impression bearing the name Gedaliah ben Pashur, a minister in the court of King Zedekiah, has recently been uncovered completely intact during archeological excavations in Jerusalem's ancient City of David, located just below the walls of the Old City. The name appears in the Book of Jeremiah (38:1).

The discovery of the temple indicates that Zippori, the Jewish capital of the Galilee during the Roman period, had a significant pagan population which built a temple in the heart of the city center. The building of the church on the foundation of the temple testifies to the preservation of the sacred section of the city over time.

Two years have passed since IDF soldier Gilad Shalit on the Israeli side of the border with Gaza on June 25, 2006. 
Defense Minister Barak (26 June 2008): "As a soldier, former commander and defense minister I say that we have a moral responsibility to bring the soldiers back home, dead or alive."
